Gift Alert for Parents: Axial SCX24 The Best RC Cars for Kids as young as 4?
I wanted to give a heads-up to parents considering RC cars for their kids. They are a great way to get the little ones outside. For my younger son, the Axial SCX24 has been a hit since he got it for his fourth birthday. The only real limitation is hand size; if they can hold the controller, they can drive it.
As a kid, I had RC cars and was excited to get one for my son. When my older boy turned 4, he got the Arrma Granite a 1/10 scale “bash” truck, a hobby-quality vehicle. While fun, they’re expensive and overwhelming for young kids. He broke his truck nearly every time he drove it due to its speed, and in hindsight, 4 is a bit young for such a toy. Repairing them is costly as well. On the other hand, toy-grade RC cars are not repairable, have a short lifespan, and lack the capabilities that make them a kids favorite.
The Axial SCX24 is a great hobby quality option. These trucks are perfect for younger kids for several reasons:
- Slow Speed: Top speed is comparable to a brisk walk as they are rock crawlers, making them much easier for kids to control.
- 24th scale: The small size makes them fun to drive both indoors and out. Couch cushions to landscape beds are great fun. Rock crawler type obstacles are everywhere. Their size also makes them easy to transport, you can take them anywhere.
- Durability: These cars are lightweight, and their slower speed makes them extremely resilient to crashes.
- Repairable & Upgradeable: Unlike toy-grade RCs that are disposable, hobby-quality cars like the Axial SCX24 are fully repairable and upgradeable. With the included allen key you can work on most of the vehicle, almost every bolt is the same size. There are tons of resources online—YouTube tutorials and exploded diagrams are plentiful. Most replacement/upgrade parts are in the $8-$15-dollar range and easy to find locally or on Amazon.
The Axial SCX24 is the most popular mini crawler, and it’s supported by a large online community, making repairs and upgrades affordable and accessible. After tinkering with ours for more than a few years, we were going to try different trucks but we’ve decided to stick with the Axial SCX24 and go full-on with competition-level builds as the support and custom parts availability is next level.
If you’re looking for a kid-friendly, durable, and customizable RC, I highly recommend the Axial SCX24! They come in a variety of styles , I shared many through Amazon Affiliate links and while there are some small differences all are equally repairable and upgradeable. The price differences are mostly due to the different bodies. This is my son’s upgraded truck. Have fun, Happy Holidays from Freak Manufacturing!
